A Busy Box is an essential item for cub scout meetings

In preparing to lead your cub scout den, it’s a good idea to assemble a “Busy Box” so that you will be ready for anything. I actually have two busy boxes — one for essential items, and one for everything else. The essential items are things like paper, markers, scissors, and tape — things that you might need at any meeting.

Busy boxes can be a life saver when you need a gathering activity or something to keep the scouts occupied when other ideas just don’t pan out. Sometimes, I will just dump out the contents of a box and have the scouts come up with an invention or a game. These have led to some of the most fun times we have had as a den, as the scouts get to stretch their creative muscles and run the show.

Here are some items to include in your busy box:

  • pencils and pens
  • scissors
  • glue
  • crayons
  • markers
  • paper
  • duct tape
  • scotch tape
  • glue sticks
  • pie pan
  • magnets
  • paper clips
  • pipe cleaners
  • popsicle sticks
  • paper towel tubes
  • coins
  • cloth strips
  • clothespins
  • plastic lids
  • wooden dowels
  • buttons
  • string
  • tape measure
  • rope
  • tennis balls
  • marbles
  • paper plates
  • plastic cups
  • pulleys
  • combination locks
  • plastic containers
  • ping pong balls
